Planning a barbecue? Watch out for the unemployed wasps!

With the weather set to stay warm and people planning barbecues, pest control experts are warning people to be extra careful about wasps which are now at their most aggressive and dangerous.

Managing Director of Surrey-based Cleankill Pest Control Paul Bates explains: “Worker wasps have finished their life’s work as queen wasps have stopped laying and don’t need food bringing to them. This means that the workers are free to go out and enjoy themselves which includes stealing meat on the barbecue. There will also be drunk wasps around who have been feasting on fermented fruit and will be extra bold.

“All this means that the wasps are likely to sting for no reason and they are now at their most dangerous.” Each nest contains around 10,000 wasps and their stings can be fatal to some people who are allergic to them. The advice is to keep clear of nests, especially if you are wearing summer clothing such as shorts and t-shirt.

In East Sussex last week an author collapsed at the roadside when she was out for a walk after being bitten by an insect. Luckily she was spotted and an ambulance was called. The insect sting had caused her face, lips and throat to swell up, making it hard for her to breathe. Pets are vulnerable too. A dog nearly died after being stung 130 times by wasps in Fife, Scotland. http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/425183/Sting-in-the-tail-as-petrified-p...

“Calls to wasps nests have increased compared to last year but numbers are far fewer than two years ago and we are now expecting a surge. We urge people to call in professional pest controllers for help and strongly advise them not to tackle nests themselves,” added Paul.
