Got a problem with mosquitos? Check your shower trap

Mosquitos

Cleankill Pest Control is reminding homeowners to check their shower traps after one client found themselves with a nasty infestation of mosquitos in the middle of winter.

The East Sussex resident was surprised to find they were being bitten by mosquitos in January. Initial searches for the cause of the problem proved inconclusive. It was only when they looked in the shower trap of a rarely used shower that they found lots of tiny, vicious mosquito young.

Suzi said: “The shower is in the family bathroom and is rarely used because of its poor design. I suppose the mosquitos must have been festering, dormant in there during the autumn months. It’s not a problem you think about in East Sussex in winter and it was only when I started noticing a few insects flying around and then being bitten that I started to investigate.”

Mosquito larvae are commonly found in bodies of undisturbed, warm, organically polluted underground water–sump areas, unused shower traps, etc. These provide them with a perfect environment in which to multiply.

Cleankill Pest Control Managing Director Paul Bates: “You don’t expect to find mosquitos in your home in winter in the UK but, with modern central heating, if there is a place with stagnant water available to them, they will breed. This can then be a nuisance in terms of bites if you are unlucky enough to have relatively rare Culex pipiens molestus – a species of indoor mosquito.”

Dealing with a mosquito infestation is relatively simple – drain the stagnant water and clean out any polluting matter – hair, leaves, etc. The difficulty is in identifying where the problem is, as mosquitos tend to breed in hidden places.

Once you have tried all the obvious places, our advice would be to call in a professional pest control surveyor. They have the expertise and knowledge to help you identify and solve the problem quickly and effectively.
