Some wasp species are solitary and as a general rule do not bother you. It is those that live in colonies that are a problem. In the UK the most common are the German Wasp and the Common Wasp, which are typically found nesting in your attics and roof voids.
Some wasp species live in trees and some underground. As a general rule wasps that live underground are much more aggressive than other species, and as such should be given a wide berth.
Although wasp stings can prove fatal to people who have an extreme allergic reaction, to most of us they are just a nuisance. They frighten people and prevent children from playing outdoors. They can ruin barbecues and garden parties and more seriously they will contaminate your food.
Do-it-yourself wasp removal is ill advised. Insecticides that are effective against wasps’ nests are not available to the general public.
Furthermore wasps will swarm and viciously attack persons trying to destroy their nest. A large nest will contain tens of thousands of wasps. You should never attempt to destroy a wasps’ nest without wearing protective clothing.
