Glis glis hibernate from late October until late May, but recently we have experienced glis glis active in people’s homes. A likely explanation for this is that the habitat in which the glis glis is hibernating is destroyed, thus causing them to abandon their nest. This could be caused by a tree being felled, or a roof being removed from a house. If you think you may have glis glis, click here to visit our website.

At this time of year we experience an increase in calls from customers who have squirrels in their attic. Although squirrel activity slows down in cold weather they do not hibernate. Squirrels often produce two litters a year – the first in Feb/March and a second in June/July. Litters can be as large as six, but three is more common. Because squirrels are larger than most rodents they make a lot of noise in your attic. They can also be quite destructive. If you would like advice about squirrels you can visit our website by clicking here

There is quite a bit of confusion surrounding glis glis, particularly in relation to what is legal and what is not.

True or False?

Glis glis have to be caught in live cages.

False. Certain spring traps are allowed

Glis glis that are caught in live cages cannot lawfully be released

True. It is an offence to release glis glis once they have been captured.

The Facts.

The glis glis is protected under Section 11(2) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Pest Controllers who deal with glis glis have to register with Natural England, a body which advises the Government on environmental matters. Once registered, Pest Controllers must comply with the conditions of the licence produced by Natural England – known as a ‘Class Licennce’.

If you think you have glis glis in your attic you can go to our glis glis page for more information

There are two types of people living in the Chilterns – those who have never heard of glis glis and those that wish they hadn’t.

Glis glis were introduced into the UK by Lord Rothschild, probably at the beginning of the 20th Century and bred rapidly after some escaped into the wild. Exactly how many now occupy the Chlitern Hills is not certain, but it is likely to be in the tens of thousands.

They can be quite destructive once they get into your attic. I have seen several examples of water pipes and electrical cables destroyed by them.

Amazingly they hibernate for about 7 months of every year and they will be waking up soon – towards the end of May.

Glis glis are emerging from their marathon 7 month hibernation. People are reporting sightings and noises from their attic.

If you think you may have glis glis you can get more information Glis Glis Control page
